The “Monasteries Route” – or “Ruta dels Monestirs” as it is called locally – provides an itinerary which passes through the central areas of Valencia, linking five ancient convents or monasteries. It can be done easily by road with direct access to the monasteries, or equally well on foot using the GR-236 hiking path, which follows medieval mountain paths (the Pas del Pobre), authentic old tracks, and old railway lines. Along its 90km length from Gandía to Alzira we pass through a wide range of villages, valleys, rivers and mountains.

The Monestir de Sant Jeroni near Alfauir was built by Alfons el Vell (Duke of Gandía) in order to take in the Jeroni monks of Javea in 1388. A particularly outstanding feature is the gothic style cloisters, and also well worth visiting are the Romantic style gardens which were constructed by the Trénor family, who are still the current owners.

The Convent del Corpus Christi near Llutxent dates from 1422 when Dominican monks began its construction, and in fact the first Valencian university was housed here. Right by the monastery you will find the Corpus Christi Church, built in a mediterranean gothic style, and which was declared a national monument in 1982.

There is a wide variety of architectural styles to be found at the Monestir de la Valledigna in Simat, including gothic influences of the 14th century, and baroque influences of the 17th & 18th centuries. In 1991 the Valencian Government acquired the monastery in order to carry out restoration and refurbishment works, which were completed in 1998 when the building was re-opened.

The oldest of the workings at the Convent d’Aigües Vives in the area near Carcaixent date back to the 13th century, but the construction of the current building was originally undertaken in the 15th century. The cloisters, which have vaults with baroque-style interior decorations, are especially welcoming to the visitor, whilst the convent’s tiling is a fine example of 18th century Valencian ceramics.

The Monastir de la Murta near Alzira was founded between the 15th & 16th centuries. Especially noteworthy is the tower known as the Torre dels Coloms and also the renaissance style gate, above which a coat of arms is still to be seen. This belongs to the Vich family who were owners and benefactors of the monastery for many years. In 1989 the Town Hall of Alzira acquired the property and began the restoration of this historic monastery

A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT

Marxuquera is an area that lies to the west of the town of Gandia, stretching to the municipal boundaries of Ador and Palma de Gandia, with the mountainous areas of Sierra Falconera in its centre and Sierra Grossa to the west. Its total land area is approximately 750 hectares, or 12.21% of the total area of the municipality of Gandia.

Crossing through Marxuquera is the road that lies to the west of Gandia and which leads to Simat via La Drova and Barx across the Coll dels Caragols. It is here that we can appreciate the scale of the mountains that enclose our wonderful valley. From any point in Marxuquera you can see the guardian of the valley – the mountain of Monduver – rising up in the distance like an 840 metre high giant which seems to watch over our lives from above.

Nature has ensured that Marxuquera is divided up into two distinct parts with the mountain of Falconera in the middle, which exactly separates Marxuquera Alta and Marxuquera Baixa with the road called Raco de Tomba. The climate here, combined with the protection given by the mountains and the gentle prevailing breezes, all serve to provide an environment conducive to a healthy life.

The name of Marxuquera has now been applied to the area of the entire valley, which extends to the municipal boundaries of Rotova, Palma de Gandia, Beniopa and La Drova, but previously was used to identify only the collection of houses that grew up in what we now call Ermita de Marxuquera, dedicated to the beloved Virgin of Monduver.

GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

This coastal plain, as it is described in many books, is geologically very complex, which explains the formation of numerous caves and caverns. Because of this, Marxuquera is the perfect area for cavers and researchers of the archaeological remains found in the caves (men such as H. Breuil, L. Pericot and others), which date back to prehistoric times. There is a widely held opinion that the name of Marxuquera comes from the belief that the sea used to reach as far as the mountain slopes, substantiated by various findings of marine remains in the area.

La Drova is situated at the base of Mt. Monduver (841m). If you climb to the top there is a panoramic view of the La Safor region, and on a clear day it is possible to see the island of Ibiza.

The area is mountainous with numerous walks of all degrees of difficulty, but well worth the effort for the views alone. This natural environment is a refuge for a variety of flora and fauna. There are two dozen different herbs to be found growing wild on the slopes, many specialty trees and rare orchids.

The skies are dominated by the stately Royal Eagle – you will find it gliding above the crags seeking prey. Within the forest, woodpeckers and nightingales live together with weasels, badgers and an animal that has returned to the forest after centuries, the boar. The calls most prevalent at night are those of the fox, the little owl, barn owl and common owl.

La Drova and Barx have spring water sites, which make excellent stopping points for replenishing bottles when walking or cycling.

Restaurant Parpallo in La Drova village is famous throughout the area for their paellas.

THE CLIMATE

Summer is the longest of the seasons in LaDrova and is a very settled one with few spells of unstable weather. The Mediterranean dictates the weather we experience here between May and September with its daily pattern of breezes (except on those days with a strong westerly wind). There is little of no rain; when it does occur it is in the form of storms set off by Mt. Monduver or even the sea. The first type forms in the afternoon on days of humid heat and almost complete calm, and the second type frequently takes the form of exceptionally heavy downpours. All that is an exception, however, because the summer in our valley is a bright and dry season with plenty of irrigation and with maximum temperatures of 40° which are tempered by the Mediterranean breezes.

The onset of Autumn begins in September, generally with less turbulence than with other seasons. Once again the Atlantic winds sweep over the Iberian peninsular and bring with them the first rains, whilst at the same time the warm winds retreat southwards and are replaced by the first, albeit still mild, cold fronts. This, coupled with the rains caused by the Mediterranean (the Gota Fria phenomenon and storms from the east), mean that during this time 70-80% of LaDrova’s total rainfall occurs, with November being the wettest month. The winds increase to level 3 or 4 and the temperature drops very rapidly and steadily.

Barx

The historic village of Barx is located just 1.3 km from La Drova.

The village boasts many shops including, two supermarkets, a chemist, two bakers, three butchers, a bank, and a tobacconist. There are numerous bars and restaurants providing excellent meals at ridiculously low prices. A typical ‘menu del dia’, consisting of a three course meal with wine and coffee, costs around 7 Euros.

A weekly market is held on Tuesdays, where many bargains can be found, as well as fresh fish from Gandia.

There are many fiestas in Barx, the main one celebrated during the third week in August. This fiesta is in honour of St Michael and the Divine Shepherdess, of whom there is a statue overlooking the village. During the fiestas, there are lots of activities including theatre shows, live bands, fantastic pyrotechnic displays, with the celebrations carrying on throughout the night until 6am!

The Holy Grail of Valencia – Valencia Cathedral a Sacred Destination

The most celebrated treasure in Valencia Cathedral is a chalice known as the Santo Caliz, which is said to be the famous Holy Grail. Whether or not this is so, it is certainly an intriguing artifact. It is of ancient date and was hidden in a monastery in northern Aragon throughout the Dark Ages, where it inspired many Grail legends. It has been enshrined in the cathedral since 1437, and can be seen in a dark, simple stone chapel in the corner of the cathedral.

The City of Arts and Sciences

Is a unique complex devoted to scientific and cultural dissemination which is made up of five main elements: the Hemisfèric (IMAX cinema and digital projections), the Umbracle (a landscaped vantage point and car park), the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum (an innovative centre of interactive science), the Oceanográfico (the largest aquarium in Europe with over 500 marine species) and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (which takes care of the operatic programme). The Ágora, which will give the complex a multifunctional space, is under construction.

Bioparc Valencia

Located in the Turia Gardens of the old river channel, is a new generation zoo conceived with the zoo-immersion philosophy. When entering the more than 100,000 m2 park, the visitor feels totally submerged in the wild habitats that have been recreated here: the Savannah, Madagascar and Equatorial Africa. Visitors can enjoy, practically without barriers, spectacular landscapes in which different species co-exist as they would in nature.

Located at the northern end of the Costa Blanca, Gandía is a great place to spend a family holiday and an ideal town to use as a base for excursions to the better known and more commercialised parts of the coast.  Once you have had your fill of the facilities of the busier parts of the coast, you can then retreat to the relative peace and calm of Gandía and its surroundings.  The most obvious place on the Costa Blanca for theme parks, water parks and loads of family holiday fun and entertainment is the resort of Benidorm.  Famous – or infamous – for its high-rise buildings and low-cost package holidays, Benidorm is also a great place to visit whilst on holiday in the area.  You can make the most of what it has to offer for a day’s excursion, and then drive the easy 40 minute trip back up the motorway to your rural base in the Gandía area.
Dolphin shows, bird displays, sea-lion demonstrations and lots more of interest to animal lovers are all to be found at the Mundo Mar complex, situated on the outskirts of Benidorm, and close by the Aqualandia water theme park.  The two parks are under the same ownership and share a car park, so you can buy an advantageously priced joint ticket and split your day between the two attractions.
Holidaymakers of all nationalities and ages find so much to see and do along the Costa Blanca generally, that it is easy to combine the requirements of a conventional family holiday with those of the teenage family member who wants to spend their vacation time in the same place as the rest of the family, but able to access other sources of entertainment during the same holiday.  For the same reason, young couples will also find plenty of suitable entertainment and leisure facilities at their disposal for their ideal holiday as well.

Buying a house in Spain is a major step for anybody, beset with pitfalls and problems.
We’ve done it so let us help you with your house hunting, at least by giving you a comfortable stay, a hearty breakfast and a welcome at the end of the day to discuss your progress over a pint or two or a glass of wine.
You don’t have to be left in the dark – we will help you all we can and hopefully point you in the right direction. Generally, estate agents in this area are very helpful and we can help you here too.
Come and discover the area, make sure you like it (as we do) and then go from there. One of the major attractions for us when we first came here was the fact that it is so green. Having seen much of the hot and arrid parts of Spain, this was definitely a plus, added to that the friendliness of the people and the fact that it is not as commercial as other better known areas.
