Gandia’s Fiesta
Every year Gandia stages a big fiesta at the end
of September/beginning of October to mark the importance to the town of
Francis Borgia. This year’s ran from Wed. 30th until Sunday 4th Oct
and was a non-stop series of events in the town ranging from traditional
processions to late night pop concerts. The enduring theme is a
mediaeval one, and there are countless stalls in the streets selling
traditional handicrafts & jewellery as well as food, with all the
stallholders dressed in costumes from the Middle Ages.
Free
concerts by pop tribute bands were held in the gardens of the Casa de
Cultura each night, as well as a late night series of pop concerts in the
large park by the river Serpis. The streets and squares themselves
were venues for small street theatre performances, and these were never
short of an audience – it seemed that everyone in Gandia and the
surrounding area was out each evening, and the streets were crowded with
people just out to have a fun, sociable time. There was a huge
choice of stalls selling food, so people would make a long night of it,
taking in an early concert, and then having something to eat before
walking round the streets or going to the fun fair across the river.
The whole atmosphere was relaxed, yet vibrant and friendly and made a
visit to Gandia even more worthwhile than usual.
